Universities across Texas, including TCU, SMU, and UNT are cutting back on their budgets thanks to last year's stock market plunge which put a big hit in their endowments. TCU has imposed a hiring freeze, and all universities will see student scholarships affected.

Received an e-mail from Shawn Kornegay, Associate Director of Communications at TCU, making this correction:
"We are not in a 'hiring freeze' (Dallas Morning News reported that in error). We are still hiring, but just not adding new positions."
Thanks for the clarification, Shawn.

What's this? Save money, eh?
THEN WHY THE @#$% BUILD A NEW STADIUM WHEN YOUR 1 WIN FOOTBALL TEAM CAN'T FILL UP THE ONE THEY'VE GOT?!
Now, not only are the students footing half that bill...they won't have as much scholarships available to them. Absolutely incredible.

::A NEW STADIUM
You're confused. They are saving their money. The stadium is your money.

J-Rizzie, it's supposed to be both:
The athletics fee, if passed, could only account for half of the $60 million venue, according to state law. The remaining money must come from private donors or sponsors.
You're telling me they're raising $30MM privately (trying, anyways) during this economic debacle and they're going to use it for a goddamn stadium rather than replenishing the depleted scholarship funds? Terrible. I'm embarrassed to be an alumni.

Sorry Scott. I never understand sports expenditures at a school. My alum org calls every coupla months begging for football money and I just give them hell. "So how much of my donation would go to fixing that backup power system for the high energy research center?" .... <crickets.>
