We know the week started off so cold and nasty that you didn’t even want to get out of your Slanket long enough to powder your nose. Though, of course, if you literally wanted to powder your nose, those handy sleeves would’ve made it a snap! Well, now that it’s a little warmer, get off the couch and out on the town for a very varied sampling of events for the week ahead.
Doobie Brothers: Cheech & Chong Light Up America
Friday, January 9, 7:30 p.m.
OK, now we know Cheech & Chong aren’t exactly waving the rainbow flag, but we love when aging stars reunite (hence our well-worn Dynasty: The Reunion Criterion Shoulder-Pad Collection DVD autographed by all the leads). Besides, if these two can bury the hatchet after all these years, there’s hope for us reconciling with that bar-back we tripped at JR’s last week when he picked up our beer bottles that clearly still had two sips left in each.
Tickets $39.50 - $59.50; The Majestic Theatre, Dallas; www.liveatthemajestic.com
Gay Bars In The Mist: Guerilla Gay Bar Announces Its Next Secret Location
Friday, January 9, Location & Time TBD
We love a good secret. But what we love even more is taking over a straight bar for the night and gaying the place up for a few hours. The best part about Guerilla Gay Bar is that they keep the suspense alive and don’t announce the venue until the day before. But lucky you, today’s the day. Go to their web site and find out where all the gays in Dallas will be tomorrow.
B.O.W. Wow!: Broadway Our Way – Divas Awakening
Friday - Sunday, January 9 -18
As the old saying goes, never wake a sleeping diva. But Uptown Players has more courage than a team of naked bear wrestlers and they’re daring to awaken the beautiful beasts. (We’re still talking about divas, right?) Anyway, this year the lovely ladies (both the biological and duct-taped variety) will perform songs from Legally Blonde, Xanadu, Hairspray, Spring Awakening and many classic musicals, too. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Uptown Players and includes auction items and a reception after each performance.
Tickets: $40 (includes reception); KD Studio Theatre, Dallas; www.uptownplayers.org
Hooray For That Place In California: Film Series at Dallas Public Library
Saturday, January 10, 2:00 p.m.
Every Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in January, catch a Hollywood classic. It’s the one time you can go to the library and not worry about making noise. This week, catch High Noon with Gary Cooper. He’s got a really big gun and he knows how to use it. Plus, high noon reminds us of brunch. Mmmmm…omelettes.
Dallas Public Library - J. Erik Jonsson Central Library; www.dallaslibrary.org
Wonder Wind Powers, Activate!: Dallas Wind Symphony Presents Wonderwinds
Tuesday, January 13, 8:00 p.m.
Talk about a spectacular blow job. The Dallas Wind Symphony and the Wind Symphony of Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra join forces for marches, overtures and everything horn-y. We will now reserve our tickets in hell for using sex jokes in the same listing for a kids’ group.
Tickets $14 - $47; Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas; www.dws.org
