The Fort Worth Independent School District is making plans for students to be witnesses to history. During the upcoming Presidential Inauguration students can watch the ceremonies live through television or Web connections.
“Our libraries will show the Inauguration activities, especially during the swearing-in ceremonies and speeches,” said Chief Academic Officer Michael Sorum. “We are working on a district web portal to share information, lesson plans and activities for students and teachers making this a real, live learning experience.”
Three schools, Dunbar High School, Morningside Middle School and Dolores Huerta Elementary School, have agreed to allow media coverage on January 20. Media interested in visiting a school during the Inauguration Ceremony should contact the Communications Office.
As previously announced, a contingent of 42 Fort Worth ISD students, teachers and parents from Southwest High School and Arlington Heights High School will attend the festivities surrounding the inauguration.
“We’ll depart DFW on January 18, and while in Washington, D.C., we’ll visit the Museums of the Smithsonian Institute, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, National Archives, Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress,” said Samuel A. Wilson, AP U.S. History teacher and Student Council sponsor at Southwest High School.
On January 20, the group will watch the ceremonies from the Mall.
The District’s Web Master, Jennifer Perez, will be blogging the students’ experience on www.fwisd.org, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Politex Blog and ABC’s Good Morning America.
