North Texas cities hope upcoming legislative session will consider dangerous breed restrictions
The red-headed stepchild of the canine world, the pit bull, may have an enemy in the state this upcoming Texas legislative session.
Don't look at me like that. Don't come any closer, puppy. Stay. STAY! Oh god, no, no, NOOOOOOO! Puppy pit bull claims another life... with cuteness.
Several cities across Texas, including a number of them in Dallas-Fort Worth (Duncanville, Frisco, Mesquite), have already expressed interest in breed-specific legislation targeting dangerous breeds, potentially banning said animals altogether. There is currently some ambiguity as to whether cities have the right to enact such restrictions according to Texas law. If Attorney General Greg Abbott finds that cities do not, they'll need support in the legislature to obtain that right.
Texas already has some of the toughest laws for dangerous dogs, holding owners criminally responsible for their dog's actions. The legislative session begins on Tuesday, January 13.
