2. Announcements/Reminders/News:
a. I received a call Tuesday from Jeff Deaton, member of the band Honi Deaton and Dream (and Honi's husband). Jeff, Honi and the band have moved to Graham, TX and are looking forward to being active in the local bluegrass community. They have contracted with the City of Graham to hold a series of bluegrass concerts at the Graham Memorial Auditorium, 628 Third Street, Graham, TX (click here for map). Their first concert will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Presently, they anticipate about 4 concerts per year at the auditorium which has a seating capacity of 778. Visit their website http://honideaton.com/ for more information about this superior bluegrass band. Call 940 549-3266 for more information about the concert if February.
b. Club member Wes Brown is a member of the Dallas Banjo Band. He sent me the following information (permanent entry below under "Regularly Scheduled Events):
The Dallas Banjo Band plays 1st Saturday morning of every month at Back Country BBQ on Greenville Ave., just north of Park Lane. Band practice is 9-11 and then they play a free show from 11-12. Anyone interested can come around 10 and listen as long as they like. BBQ is some of the best in town, and serving starts at 11. The band is always looking for new members, and being a proficient player is not a requirement to join. Members are happy to share how many joined the band, play as a group, and learned to play the banjo at the same time. If you would like to play in a group but worry that your proficiency is not quite ready for Bluegrass, check out the Dallas Banjo Band.

Upcoming Workshops & Camps:
a. BABA has a great series of workshops lined up for January 2009. Orrin Star is coming to town for four workshops on both flatpicking guitar and mandolin. Orrin is an award-winning guitarist and mandolin player who combines hot picking, cool singing, and good humor. Once described as "Arlo Guthrie meets Doc Watson", he was the 1976 National Flatpicking Champion, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and has a repertoire that ranges from bluegrass standards to little-known folk gems, Celtic fiddle tunes, to fingerstyle blues. Orrin will be presenting four workshops (two on flatpicked guitar and two on mandolin) Friday evening through Sunday during the weekend of January 16, 2009. Because Orrin values the ability to work closely with a small number of participants, we will have a tight limit on space of about a dozen participants per session. We will send out a detailed e-mail later this year, but if you'd like more information or to secure your places early, please feel free to get in touch with Joe Dodson at joe.dodson@yahoo.com or by phone at 713-880-5991.
