UPDATED: Keller ISD caves to media pressure, will show Obama inauguration

14

Updated 01:14 p.m., January 14, 2009

While many Dallas-Fort Worth area school districts are offering their students the opportunity to watch Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20, that opportunity will not be available in Keller ISD. District officials say that they "shouldn't sacrifice the instructional time" to watch the event live since students will be able to watch it later at home on the internet or in rebroadcasts.

UPDATE: As Doyle points out below, the Star-Telegram has since changed their story to reflect that Keller ISD will now allow students to watch the inauguration as part of their social studies curriculum. Couldn't have written a whole new story and saved me some embarrassment, Startlegram?

Erin Rice says:

Interesting, since the district, or at least Keller Middle School, felt differently about sacrificing instructional time to watch the original O.J. verdict way back when.

Scott Doyle says:

Ummm...

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but seems to me the linked article discusses how they are showing it in school:

The Keller School district reversed course Wednesday morning and announced that it is appropriate for students in the district to view the inauguration of Barack Obama during class time Tuesday afternoon.

Damn them -- they changed the story after I posted this. I've made the update -- thanks, Doyle.

In fact, I'm relatively sure my being an editor would intensify said pain.
