Shakespeare Dallas reveals 2009 schedule

Shakespeare Dallas announced it is taking a new direction this year – featuring two of Shakespeare’s most colorful comedies during the company’s 38th summer season. The Taming of the Shrew and a Texas-style adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor will take center stage at Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre in June and July. The comedies highlight a schedule of theatrical programming that promises to be fun, complex and engaging.

“After producing Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies in past seasons, we now look forward to exploring other facets of Shakespeare’s works – his lightest and funniest plays, as well as his most complex examinations of social order and humanity,” said Executive & Artistic Director Raphael Parry.

As part of a unique 2009 theatrical lineup, Shakespeare Dallas will also produce several staged readings. In addition, this fall the company will perform Shakespeare’s most popular Roman play, Julius Caesar, in both Dallas and Addison.

Shakespeare Dallas' 2009 Schedule:

• In February, “Shakespeare on the Go,” an educational tour, brings All the World’s a Stage to elementary schools across Dallas, introducing the students to the works of Shakespeare. In April, the program will bring Shakespeare & the Written Word to local junior high and high schools. The elementary, junior and high school tours will reach dozens of Dallas schools and more than 10,000 students, ages 3 – 12.
• In April and May, co-produced stage readings of Cymbeline and Timon of Athens will be performed at the Bath House Cultural Center.
• In June and July, the community is invited to watch Shakespeare performed under the stars at Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre. During these blockbuster months, Shakespeare Dallas will perform a Comedia dell’Arte inspired production of The Taming of the Shrew, directed by SD Executive & Artistic Director Raphael Parry, as well as The Merry Wives of Windsor (Texas), directed by SD Artistic Associate René Moreno.
• At the end of July, Junior Players will present As You Like It, a continuation of SD’s 20-year partnership with the organization. As You Like It will also be performed at Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre.
• In October, patrons can enjoy a classic performance of Julius Caesar at Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre and Addison Circle Park.
