Texas House Bill would allow fireworks sales for Texas Independence Day
A bill proposed by State Rep. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) would allow the sale of fireworks from February 20th until midnight on March 2, Texas Independence Day.
The legislation, HB 599, would add the Texas Independence Day window to three other periods when fireworks may be legally sold to the public in Texas: the Christmas Day/New Year’s window, the July 4th Independence Day window, and a narrowly crafted Cinco de Mayo window for border counties.
This is a bill we’re glad to see. There hasn’t been as much focus on Texas Independence Day in the last two decades as there was in the 1890s immediately before and after the state celebrated its sesquicentennial. While selling fireworks only goes so far toward helping gain more attention for the holiday, it is a start. Plus, it is a good thing–economically speaking–for the fireworks industry.
I’m sure fire safety groups and whatever lobby groups represent stupid teenagers who managed to shoot themselves in the eye with a Black Cat will oppose it, but it would be nice to see it passed.

I think we should allow fireworks sales around St. Swivens Day, the Chinese New Year and Ground Hog Day - the more, the merrier!

(Maybe the resulting conflagrations will take some heat off the whole gun ownership stigma.

Scott Doyle, says:
Well hell, if they allow fireworks in border counties for Cinco de Mayo why the hell can't we celebrate our independence from Mexico?!
Concur with Pavel, opposition clearly should be stripped of the title "Texan" and promptly deported.

I think they (state legislature) should pass this bill. Hut I have to assume they won't, knowing how much fire marshal's around the state want fireworks banned any time of year.
But this also makes me question when they passed the law a little over one year ago, for the sell of fireworks at Cinco de Mayo and did not notify fireworks vendors of what would have to be done in order to set up for the first selling period so may were not able to and the fact that many newspapers around the state reported that within the next legislature period it would include all of Texas not just the 100 miles surrounding the border. Makes people wonder if the papers were exaggerating or if some legislature didn't know what he was talking about.

OMG, would this mean that I can finally lit a firecracker for the first time ever?

Hell yes! And one thing..why don't we use useless places like the big parking lots of Texas Stadium, Reunion, and other huge parking lots, to host fireworks events? Gotta be able to make some use of all that concrete, and negate any notion you are gonna burn stuff down. Safety popo be damned!

I'd say that "abused" is a more appropriate adjective.
