Inauguration-watching party at Victory Park in Dallas draws more than 500

13

— A crowd of about 500-600 gathered at Victory Plaza on Tuesday morning to witness the inauguration of Barack Obama on Victory Park's big screens.

They huddled in the cold sun on the northeast side of the plaza, eyes turned upward at the giant video screens to watch Obama magically transform from president-elect into the leader of the entire free world.

Just like the president’s multi-colored campaign, the crowd contained black people, white people, Hispanic people—and some Asians. And, as if heeding Obama’s call for unity, they refrained from rioting. There wasn’t a dry eye in the plaza on this cold and windy day. No, one almost expected a river of tears to flow out onto Houston Street, carrying clanging buoys of hope and change.

The crowd held its breath as Obama stumbled through the short and easily memorized oath, then politely clapped and whooped when he finally finished it. Many waved flags, some held homemade signs aloft and more than one hugged the person next to them whether they knew them or not.

In his speech, the newly crowned president recalled such things as the revolution against England’s tyranny, said regular people were better than rich people, complimented Americans on their hard work and said a few things about the economy. All around, a pretty decent speech.

When he finished, the crowd unclasped their hands, looked around to see what everybody else was doing and went back to their cars, steeled and ready for whatever the afternoon would bring.

"And, as if heeding Obama’s call for unity, they refrained from rioting."

That might actually do some of those businesses good..at least get some exposure and have something to be known for besides more fake uptown douchery...

lol not fake..perhaps I should have just said "more uptown douchery"...it still works..even though it really isn't uptown, nor real in any sense of "for the common person"....

Uptown Douchery is the height of fakeness in this town. I'll give the crowd credit, they were polite and respectful to each other. Maybe this is a new day in America, where we can finally get it together.
