Theater Spotlight of the Week: Raphael Parry
Interview with Raphael Parry, Director of One in 3
Project X has always maintained their mission of providing new and unconventional works, and this week is going to be pretty ground-breaking. The company will be performing a piece on the taboo "A" word. Yes, abortion. One in 3 will mark the world premiere of this controversial show, directed by Project X founder, Raphael Parry.
Having interviewed Mr. Parry before (that time with the focus on being Artistic Director of Shakespeare Dallas), we begin the interview quickly with the origin of One in 3 and how it came to become a stage piece. He talks about the extensive workshop process and how important it was to get different perspectives.
Since it is a weighty topic, I ask him what how he feels a Dallas audience will respond. He even mentions what will happen if/when protesters are outside the venue.

Since Project X is quite innovative, the play also mixes film and he discusses what the audience can expect when seeing the performance.
As usual, I ask what he wants the audience to walk away talking about. He does clarify how cast members who are on both sides of the issue are taking part in the production to get their voices heard.
Finally, since it is the world premiere, he elaborates on the plan to expand this work nationally and hopes to make it something close to The Vagina Monologues.
Performances are January 21 - February 7 on Wednesdays – Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesdays are pay-what-you-can. Some performances (Jan. 22, 24, 28, 31) will even be followed by talk-backs with the artists and activists. Purchase tickets online or by calling 214-421-2400.

JW Richard says:
Having trouble with the audio. Streaming simply isn't happening, even in my Google Reader (which is really weird), and even when I downloaded the .mp3 it got to about 11 seconds before cutting off.

Attended the preview, and yes there were a few protesters. They should step inside. It is an eye opening experience regardless of your stance on abortion rights. Easily ranks as one of the best and most important productions of Raphael Parry's career. And anyone who knows about the history of Parry's work in Dallas since the mid-1980s will appreciate the value of that statement.
