UT Dallas Center for BrianHealth plans weekly lectures in February

The University of Texas at Dallas Center for BrainHealth will host weekly public lectures in February under the header (get it? "Head"-er?) "The Brain: An Owner's Guide."

Each presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:15 p.m., with all lectures to be held at the UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth at 2200 W. Mockingbird Ln. in Dallas. The cost for each lecture is $25 per person, or $40 per couple - which, to me, means that random individual attendees might want to pair up prior to entering the venue. (Think about it.) A lecture series pass for all four talks will cost you $75.

Here's the lineup:

* Feb. 3Healing the Human Brain by Dr. Michael Kilgard. Scientists have known for decades that the human brain has the ability to reorganize itself. In fact, this is how we learn everything we know. Recent discoveries suggest it may soon be possible to help the brain rewire itself to treat neurological and psychiatric diseases. Kilgard will discuss these exciting new possibilities.

Will the actual consumption of brains make one smarter? This topic is not covered in the 2009 Owner's Guide to the Brain lecture series.

* Feb. 10STAC Attack: How the Aging Brain Stays Healthy by Dr. Denise Park. The new “Scaffolding Theory of Aging and Cognition” provides clear guidance for conditions that lead to healthy neural aging. Park will share practical, everyday methods of incorporating new learning and novel experiences to help keep your brain healthy as you age.

* Feb. 17Sleep to Get Smart, Sleep to Get Happy by Dr. Matthew Walker. Our mothers taught us that a good night’s sleep is a key ingredient of a productive day. Were they right? Will eight hours of shut-eye make us smarter and happier? Walker will speak on how sleep influences memory, creativity, and emotional well being.

* Feb. 24Speaking of the Brain: Emotion, Memory, and Consciousness by Dr. Antonio Damasio. Research has shown that emotions are neural based and play a major role in social cognition and decision making. Damasio will show how biological mechanisms of the brain dictate every emotion, memory and creative spark that we experience throughout our lifetimes.
