Thanks to people who donate food to the Burleson Animal Shelter, the City of Burleson is partnering with Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties for a pilot program called AniMeals.

Meals-on-Wheels volunteers will meet at the Burleson Animal Shelter at noon on Saturday, Feb. 7, to pick up donated pet food. The food will be delivered to more than 20 homebound elderly and disabled Meals-on-Wheels clients in Burleson.

Burleson Animal Services Supervisor Michelle Spradlin contacted Meals-in-Wheels in June 2008 to see if the non-profit agency could use food that was donated to the shelter. The shelter animals are kept on a Science Diet program, so food donated to the Burleson shelter is not used for the rescued animals. Spradlin said Meals-on-Wheels was already exploring the AniMeals concept.

Lisa Hicks with Meals-on-Wheels said in regular scheduled home visits, Meals-on-Wheels staff and volunteers found that clients were sharing their own meals with their pets because they could not afford to buy pet food. The AniMeals program was developed by Meals-on-Wheels to help the homebound elderly and disabled feed their pets properly.

Anyone who wants to be part of AniMeals may drop off donated pet food at the Burleson Animal Shelter, 1695 John Jones Dr. (FM 731 South) between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.

For more information about Burleson's role in AniMeals, call Animal Services Supervisor Michelle Spradlin at 817-447-5426. For more information about the Meals-on-Wheels program, call Lisa Hicks at metro 817-558-2840. For more information about this release, call the public information office at 817-447-5400, ext. 286.
