Dallas theater group to hold Queer Poets Competition
Queer Voltage is hosting the event that will take place in early spring 2009.
Queer Voltage, a burgeoning theater group that produced the award-winning Queer Anarchy in September of 2007 is pleased to announce the first annual Queer Voltage Queer Poets Competiton, a fundraiser for Queer Voltage Theatre. Any poet who self-identifies as GLBT may enter, and if so determined will be invited to a finalist's reading in early spring 2009. Three top prizes of 1st ($150) 2nd ($75) and 3rd ($50) place winners will be awarded along with three honorable mentions. All finalists will be featured in a commemorative chapbook made available at the Finalist's Reading. All finalists will receive certificates and the top six who place will also receive gift bags.
Those who wish to enter may submit up to three poems for $15, which includes a copy of the winning chapbook. Additional poems may be entered for $5 apiece. 10-15 finalists will be chosen to read at a special fundraiser reading in early spring of 2009. Winners will be announced at this event. No poem should exceed 3 pages in length and no more than one poem should appear per page. Contestant's name should not appear anywhere on the poems themselves as this will be a blind judging. A cover sheet including the contestant's full contact information (Name, address, phone number, email address, if applicable) poem titles and brief bio should be enclosed. Finalists need not be present at the reading to win. Checks and money orders should be made out to Queer Voltage. All entries should be postmarked no later than March 31, 2009. Entries should be sent to: Queer Voltage, 7706 Meadow Road #121, Dallas, Texas 75230. Email entries cannot be accepted.
Poems will be judged on the basis of meticulous craftsmanship, original use of language and subtlety of execution. Poets must self-identify as GLBT but it is not necessary for content to raise queer issues. Judges are respected members of the literary community and represent a variety of disciplines and orientations. Queer Voltage is a theatrical group dedicated to the performance of ground-breaking, poignant and provocative drama to advance understanding and appreciation of the Queer Community as a whole, with all its diversity, intensity, irony and rage. Queer Voltage seeks to produce theatre that depicts queerfolk with pride, complexity, empathy and panache, giving voice to both new and established playwrights.
