Restaurant/bar review: The Quinn in Oak Cliff

We should preface our visit to this Oak Cliff bar and eatery with the age-old question: How can a pub that took over an old Long John Silver’s location be anything but perfect?

Yes, there may be fresh paint on the walls, an extended patio area, and a welcome lack of pier and boat accessories, but at its core The Quinn is haunted by the ghosts of its fried fish past.

And we mean that in a good way.

It would be totally awkward to eat deliciously greasy bar food like cheese fries, “Texas Toothpicks” (fried jalapeños and onions) or smoked brisket quesadillas anywhere else.

In addition to bad-for-you-but-great-tasting apps, The Quinn also serves up some yummy main courses, too. As a starter, the Zang Boulevard Chili, made from scratch with no beans, has just enough zip to make your draft beer that much more enjoyable.

But it’s the Super Chicken Sandwich, on sourdough bread with avocado slices, mayo and Monterey Pepper Jack cheese, that really seals the deal and leaves you doing gym penance for a week.

Not a chicken fan? There are plenty of other choices including burgers, gyros, tuna melts or even a Nathan’s kosher hot dog. (Insert joke here about how long it’s been since you’ve had a hot dog in your mouth!)

Or, just skip the food all together. Nutrition is overrated anyway. Being the laid-back kind of bar it is, The Quinn has a laundry list of beer and wine options.

If you really want to seem authentic, we say go for the Pabst Blue Ribbon in a can for just $2.50. Now that’s classy. Just the kind of sophistication ol’ Long John Silver himself would appreciate.

Kitchen hours are 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11:00 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday. But more importantly, the bar is open from 11:00 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week!
