Tarrant County College to highlight global awareness with international lecture series
Tarrant County College will celebrate global awareness with a series of international lectures at South Campus throughout February. All four South Campus events will include a one-hour presentation and a question-and-answer session from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Performance Hall, SPAC 1203.
The first event, Feb. 2, will feature Reinhold Wagnleitner, two-time Fulbright Scholar and associate professor at the University of Salzburg, Austria. His talk titled “The United States of America and the World: Views from a Distance” will be based on his longtime international research and analysis of global issues.
Feb. 11, Timothy Gilbert, TCC associate vice chancellor for teaching and learning services, will discuss “The Challenges of Global Warming.” Through his involvement with the Climate Project, Gilbert is one of the nonprofit organization’s 2500 trained presenters on global warming worldwide.
Charles Hopkins, United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) chair at York University in Toronto, Canada, will speak Feb. 19. A leader in efforts to develop education to address sustainable development, Hopkins has been featured in nine major television documentaries, has shared his expertise in more than 70 countries, and is the author of a textbook on ecology and numerous journal articles.
Feb. 25, South Campus will wrap up the month’s events with a panel discussion and student forum featuring Gilbert and other faculty members who have participated in the Salzburg Global Seminar and are part of the campus Global Initiatives Committee.
Also emphasizing global awareness and sustainability, Northeast Campus will host a “Jazz Informance” Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in the theatre, building NFAB, with a talk on the history of jazz by Wagnleitner and music by New Orleans pianist Tom McDermott. At Southeast Campus, Hopkins will speak in the Roberson Theater Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 18 at 10:45 a.m.
All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Assistant Professor of History Carolyn Carney at 817-515-4192.
