Switchover to all-digital TV may be delayed, says Texas senator

Feb. 17, and TV viewers everywhere anxiously await the appearance of ... BUM! Bum! bummm... DIGITAL!

U.S. Senator from Texas Kay Bailey Hutchison, who was originally opposed to extending the deadline for the conversion to digital broadcast television (set to happen on Feb. 17), is now in support of extending the deadline for that conversion to occur.

Citing the large number of television users (i.e., Joe & Jane Public) who are not yet prepared for the switch, Senator Hutchison and others are proposing a 120-day delay in the force-fed technology upgrade.

Thus, the new deadline for broadcast stations to change their signal to all-digital will come in June, assuming that the Senate vote early next week goes as predicted.

Under the terms of the bill, any broadcast stations ready to make the switch would be free to do so on the original Feb. 17 timetable.

Aargh! There has been enough delays. Just switch already and stop wasting time on this.

Yeah, I want 24 bit digital clarity on all the rehash sitcoms and tired reality schadenfreude and I want it now.

I love how the government is screwing even something this simple up. Get it done already and free up the analog signals for first responders.

You know what would prepare people for the switch? Switching. I guarantee everyone who cares would be magically switched over within 24 hours.
