Oncor Energy tells residents to leave porch lights on to show you have power
Oncor is taking precautionary steps under the assumption that the power will go out somewhere in DFW Tuesday due to inclement weather. They are asking residents to leave porch lights on so workers know they have power. (Not unreasonable if they are working away at 3 am, but if a million people leave their porch lights on overnight, you do the math. Oncor will also make a bundle off this arrangement, no?)

Err...one should always leave front porch lights on, all night. It's better for neighborhood safety, for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

"Residential customers don't pay bills to Oncor, as BillUSA99 correctly pointed out. Regardless of which retail electric provider you use, your power is delivered over Oncor's poles and wires. Oncor is a publicly regulated utility and every penny Oncor makes is authorized by state government. Oncor is as separate from retail electric providers... with different investors and a different board of directors. Leaving a light on helps Oncor crews quickly assess where help is needed to ensure any neighbors without power gets it restored as safely and swiftly as possible -- and who doesn't want that?"

People should keep the porch light on for safety reason. It (along with strong locks) helps prevent break-ins. Coming from CA, I'm shocked about the lack of street lamps provided by the city, and even more surprised to hear from neighbors that they don't always lock-up. Why make yourself an easy target?
