UT Dallas educator to lecture on the mathematics of chess moves
At a public lecture set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, University of Texas at Dallas senior lecturer Dr. Alexey Root will relate chess strategy to mathematical concepts. The lecture will take place in room 2.410 of the Engineering and Computer Sciences Building (South).
As part of her presentation, Dr. Root - a tournament chess player since age 9 - will challenge participants to try activities from her books, including the (in)famous eight queens problem, which illustrates the mathematical concept of domination.
(As opposed to the non-mathematical concept of domination, one supposes.)
Dr. Root's free lecture is presented by the Metroplex Math Circle, a program sponsored by UT Dallas and designed to attract talented students to the field of mathematics, and to provide an accelerated avenue to develop students' mathematical and problem-solving skills.
