Dallas City Council approves plan to build 700 homes for the homeless
Their intentions may be there, but the money might not be, yet.
On Tuesday, the Dallas City Council OK'd a plan to build 700 permanent housing units for the city's homeless population. 200 of the homes will be paid for by vouchers, while the city will cover the cost of the rest other 500. However, the city is short $22 million, though Dallas could possibly get the money from federal and state sources.

This should only apply if they get a friggn job. This includes sweeping the streets, cleaning medians and watering city trees.
If not, this is insane and the funding should come from the City Council's payroll.

At least they wont be sleeping in tents or boxes........And they will have running water and they wont invade the library and use the inner city as a wall toilet...A/T, Sign of the times...

I think a good example of how a program like this should work is the Samaritan Inn in McKinney. They recently opened their transitional living apartments for people who "graduate" from the homeless shelter. From what employees have told me, the whole program is working out pretty well. Families don't get a free pass to live there forever, but it's a semi-stable living situation while they save money to buy their own homes.

I applaude the city for finally "getting it" when it comes to making sure all of citizens have a roof over their heads. Its a proven fact that once someone who was homeless has shelter over their head, their stability at keeping a job is exponentially increased. The goal here is to make sure the homeless(not bums, there is a HUGE difference)can get off the streets and lead productive lives.

Fascinating the difference between a private program like this and a government program.
