As the New Year began, many people entered 2009 with expectations and goals for the future. The city of Duncanville was no different.

At the State of the City and Community Awards Banquet Jan. 10, Mayor David Green shared the lessons learned from 2008, and the hope of greater victories for 2009.

“Positive things are happening in Duncanville, he said. “This past year was no exception. The year 2008 was filled with many accomplishments and milestones that we can all be proud of. As we reflect on our accomplishments, it is important to note that none of this would be possible without the presence and support of residents and business community.”

Throughout his presentation, Green highlighted the strengths of Duncanville. And although challenges were presented, the city has continually pursued its vision statement of becoming “a progressive city with a strong sense of community, a high quality of life and a thriving business community,” according to Green.

“Despite constant challenges and financial constraints, the city of Duncanville has progressed,” he said. “Those challenges have provided great opportunities to re-examine the way we do business to make sure w are delivering the best services possible, efficiently and cost-effectively.”

In light of all Duncanville has done, Green noted that only as a community working together can the city continue to be one where champions are made.

“Architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen said, ‘When you look at a city it is like reading the hopes, aspirations and pride of everyone who built it.'” Green said. “It is my hope that when business owners and residents look at Duncanville they will see their many contributions to the city.”

That evening, Green also celebrated those businessowners for their role in the city with the Mayor's Awards of Excellence.

“Duncanville is home to about 1,000 businesses, large and small, new and old.” Green said. “All of these businesses contribute greatly to the viability and sustainability of our community.”

The first recognized was Ben Franklin Apothecary, owned by Dan and Janice Jespersen.

“Throughout the years, Ben Franklin has relocated, remodeled and expanded to meet the needs of a growing and changing community.” Green said. “I think everyone will agree that what we enjoy most about Ben Franklin is its friendly, hometown atmosphere.”

The second recipient was Costco Wholesale, the fifth- largest retailer nationally and the eight in the world.

“Since opening in 2006, Costco Wholesale has continued to expand its membership and retail sales, becoming a significant sales tax generator for the city of Duncanville,” Green said. ”

DeFord Lumber Company ,founded in 1964, was the next to receive the award.

“As the building and supply industry have changed, DeFord's has changed with it,” Green said. “DeFord's focuses solely on supplying professional builders and property managers. (This change) has helped DeFord's remain a sound, reliable company and significant contributor to our local economy.”

The last recipient was Pioneer Frozen Foods, the oldest family-owned business in Texas and the oldest continuously operated family owned milling company in the United States.

“About 161 of its 700 employees are located at the Duncanville manufacturing facility which specializes in frozen baked products,” Green said.

Green ended his address voicing great anticipation of what awaits Duncanville in the coming year.

“As mayor, I look forward to addressing the challenges ahead, managing the redevelopment of our city and exploring the wonderful opportunities before us with pride and hope,' he said.
