North Tarrant County to get Spanish-built private tollroad by 2015
The Texas Transportation Commission has approved a plan that paves the way for private investors from Spain to build some additional lanes along a heavily-congested 13-mile stretch of Loop 820 and Airport Freeway, in northern Tarrant County.
When finished (in 2015), the two new lanes in each direction will be owned and managed by the Texas Dept. of Transportation, while the Spanish investors will get to keep the toll monies collected - for the next 52 years.
This will be the first private toll road in North Texas, and the first to implement a floating fee structure: depending on the volume of traffic, the fee to drive the entire length of the new lanes in your personal auto will vary from $1.20 to $6.50.
