Texas House Bill would make stealing A/C units a felony
A bill filed by freshman State Rep. Robert Miklos (D-Mesquite) would create a separate Penal Code offense for theft of a central air conditioning unit valued at under $100,000. The bill, HB 775, would make such a theft a Third Degree Felony.
The likely reason for the legislation is the significant rise in air conditioner thefts in the last couple of years due to the high value of copper. Most central air conditioners contain a significant amount of copper.
As for why the bill only covers central air units valued at under $100,000, that’s probably because those valued at over $100,000 are usually bigger than two cars stacked on top of each other and impossible to steal without a crane and massive flat-bed trailer.
