North Tarrant Express contract gets go-ahead from Texas attorney general

The project intended to add toll and non-toll lanes and other construction improvements on Northeast Loop 820, Texas 121/183, and I-35W north of downtown Fort Worth was in jeopardy. A 52-year agreement between the Transportation Department and NTE Mobility Partners violated state constitution by committing public funds for more than two years to the project.

After finagling the language in the contract, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott gave it the go-ahead.

The $2 billion project will be paid for partly by state-supported funds, but also with private funding, an arrangement known as a CDA. Lawmakers, however, are considering banning CDAs in the future.
