New pizza place, Sauce on the Square, coming to McKinney from owners of Rick’s Chophouse
MCKINNEY Sauce on the Square is a new Italian/pizza place slated to open in McKinney on July 17, from the owners of Rick's Chophouse, right across the street.
The restaurant is going into a space that was previously an antique shop, says owner Rick Wells.
"My partner has owned that building for about 11 years," Wells says. "Three to four years ago, we talked about putting a little Italian place at some point, given our success at Rick's. It's just part of our plan to make McKinney one of the great small cities."
He describes Sauce as "an Italian home kitchen" with pizza, pastas, and wine. That entailed the installation of a Wood Stone oven, to the tune of about $35,000.
"It took a while to get it built -- it's all bricked around," Wells says. "You have to sell a lot of pizzas to make that up."
Most promisingly, the recipe for his pizza dough is the result of a collaboration with Jean Christophe Blanc, French-born master baker and co-owner of Voila! in Allen, known for its incomparable breads and croissants.
"I think he's the best baker in the entire Dallas-Fort Worth area," Wells says.

Rick's has a great menu and some of the best fried chicken in DFW. So refreshing to not have to eat in a chain in the suburbs (catty corner Spoons is great for breakfast too). I'm sure Sauce will be great - the guys are really putting some thought into the pizza. Jean-Christophe, aside from being a master baker, has a sincere passion for pizza and is VERY particular. If you haven't made it to Voila in Allen - you need to swing by and have a sandwich on a fresh baguette. Can't wait to try it.

Nope never been to Rick's, or Mama Emilia's or whatever the other place is. Been to the Aparicio's (better than I expected) and Cafe Malaga (a favorite). Spoons is ok, not really my type of food, and the other place (Misha?) there has a decent sandwich.
