UPDATEDx2: Three Plano men kicked out of Ireland due to “insufficient means” are going back
Three Plano men who traveled to Ireland looking to backpack across the country were immediately deported by an immigration officer who said she didn't think the trio had enough means to support their trip, even after being shown a bank account of one of men which contained $10,000.
The kicker? Even though they were deemed to have insufficient means, they were each forced to buy $1,900 return tickets to New York.
UPDATE: Well, how about that? Embarrassed by the actions of their immigration department, several Irish hotels are offering free stays to the trio. Their plight had apparently been all over the Irish media. Delta, the airline on which the three had to fly back to New York, is reportedly working on helping them get back to Europe.
UPDATE 2: "The Plano 3," as the Irish press are calling them, are headed back to Ireland, thank to the generosity of d4hotels, which not only paid for their return flights and week hotel stay, but is giving them 1,000 euros for spending money. The three have also been offered free hotels elsewhere in Europe, giving their backpacking trip somewhat less of a "roughing it" feel.
Meanwhile, content partner Uncle Barky notes that coverage of this story by WFAA8 should have been more transparent, as one of the three, Colin Zwirko, is the son of WFAA employee Walt Zwirko, who hosts weekly "Computer Corner" segments on newscasts.

Seems a number of hoteliers in Ireland are offering the men all-expenses-paid trips out of embarrassment over the deportation incident.

Nothing like self-important control freaks in charge of Customs...Eh..even chopping that bank account in half, 5,000 Euros or so is plenty of money for warm beer and bad food (that's about all you get in the UK)..especially if you are backpacking.

i had the same thing happen to me when i went to ireland to backpack. i was even told the exact same thing and i even showed the lady i hade 2000 euros on me and 800 in my bank, i even had a return ticket to fly home but she cut that short and sent me home 1hr after i landed there. i was so hurt to have my dream of backpacking ireland crushed right there when i could even see the terminal not even 100ft away from me. i gave up everything i had to accomplish this dream and the lady turned me away for the exact same reason she did to them. but after reading about what happened to these 3 men it gave me hope that maybe this could maybe be fixed for me.
