Carrollton council says no to crematory

8

— Worried about a "nightmare of traffic" -- and perhaps, just nightmares themselves -- the Carrollton City Council voted down the plea to obtain a special use permit to place a crematory inside a new Carrollton funeral home. Mayor Ron Branson tells the group he isn't judging those who prefer cremation as their designated postfuneral choice. And many noted that there is a need for a crematory -- but NIMBY.

To patch up the wound, those interviewed say that John P. Brooks, the owner of North Dallas Funeral Home, is still a good guy.

James Scott says:

"Opponents urged the council to prohibit the crematory on environmental grounds and because of the stigma they said the nearby neighborhood would acquire."

Am I missing something here? What is the stigma associated with cremation? If they don't want a funeral home at all, I can see that - but what does the addition of a crematorium do? If anything, it's a little less creepy b/c you don't have the big hearse with a casket + body driving around.

Oh, and how dare those pesky dead people and their grieving relatives cause a potential minor traffic inconvenience to you - what a nightmare for you, being alive and all.
