Dallas Stars re-sign defenseman Mark Fistric to 3 year, $3 million contract

Fistric has shown himself to be a physical presence on the ice.

Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman Mark Fistric to a three-year, $3 million contract through the 2011-12 NHL season ($750,000 for 2009-10; $1 million for 2010-11; $1.25 million for 2011-12).

“Mark made some great strides with his game last season, both here in Dallas as well as with the Manitoba Moose,” said Nieuwendyk. “He is a big, physical presence with a great deal of potential, and he’ll be counted upon to solidify our blue line for the next three seasons.”

Fistric, 23, skated in 36 games with Dallas last season, recording four assists and 42 penalty minutes. In 73 career NHL games, all with the Stars, he has posted six assists and 66 penalty minutes. He also skated in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games with Dallas in 2008.

Dallas’ first-round selection (No. 28 overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft, Fistric made his NHL debut on Dec. 23, 2007 vs. Montreal and earned his first NHL point with an assist on Jan. 2, 2008 at Detroit.

The 6-2, 232-pound defenseman appeared in 35 games with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League in 2008-09, earning eight assists with 26 PIM. He then posted seven points (two goals, five assists) in 22 games, as he helped lead Manitoba to the AHL’s Western Conference crown and the Calder Cup Finals.

The Edmonton native captained the Vancouver Giants to the Western Hockey League championship in 2006, and won the Pat Quinn Award as Vancouver’s top defenseman in 2003-04. He skated for Team Canada at the 2003 World Under-18 Championships.
