Fish Shack, casual Gulf seafood joint, opens in East Plano

Restaurant has broken the spell that hung over the once-doomed location.

Fish Shack, a fast-casual Gulf seafood place with gumbo, fried catfish, and alcohol, has opened to great success on 15th Street in East Plano.

The Shack is located a few blocks east of the prime downtown strip, in a space once occupied by Long John Silvers. In the past few years, it's gone through a series of dismal openings and closings -- mostly nondescript Mexican places including Los Potrillos and My Estrella Tex Mex Restaurant.

But Fish Shack has broken the jinx. Since opening a few weeks ago, it's welcomed a steady stream of customers and serious crowds on weekend nights. It's easy to see why: Nothing on the menu is over $10.95, from fried "baskets" with shrimp, catfish, and choice of rice or French fries, to crab legs, to boiled shrimp, to crawfish boil with potatoes and corn. There is also beer and wine, and a newly-built covered patio with capacity to seat nearly 50.

Its proximity to the Plano police station guarantees that nearly any time you drop by, there'll be a couple of Plano cops eating there.

Hey !! If cops are eating at a place... take note.

They live on budgets and are forced to eat out a lot. The best mexican food in any town is locatable by at least three empty patrol cars in the lot at mealtime.

Thrilled at the coverage Gubbs!! It's right across from the theatre -- We'll push some patrons that-a-way.

Any line on how late they're open Thurs-Sat?

Jason, if you click on the Fish Shack link above, you'll see that a little fairy has input the hours. but to answer yer question, their goal is 10:30 weeknights and 11:30 on weekends. i bet they shut it down early after a spell -- that's what restaurants usually do -- but those are the hours they're quoting now. the pints looked nice and frosty!

I doubt this will happen, but perhaps JRice has the intestinal fortitude to go ask em about staying open a bit late during one of his shows to see if they get some biz and his theater goers might benefit..an experiment perhaps..

I'll do ya one better Mr. Belligerent...

The upcoming show should run under two hours... I'll drag my own lazy carcass over there with patrons in tow.

Oughta duck the 10:30 by a good half hour.

Join us? It's way up in dark scary Plano, but you can leave a trail of falafel crumbs home.
