Wine tasting added to farm tour hosted by Dallas’ Food Roots and EatGreenDFW.com
Food Roots has added a wine tasting to the list of events during a farm tour showcase three farmers who are dedicated to bringing sustainably grown produce, meat, and dairy products to the community using organic and natural methods.
Tour participants will get to sample wines from Calais Winery, compliments of Food Roots, during the tour of Oak Grove Farms, explained Food Roots co-owner Mary Kimbrough.
"We wanted to show how well wines paired with vegetables," she said, "so we chose Calais's Cuvee de Juillet, a pinot gris, and its Cuvee du Commerce, a cabernet/syrah blend. We'll taste them with vegetables provided by Oak Grove, and some neighboring producers, invited by owner Tommy Copeland and Calais owner Benjamin Calais, will be on hand to answer questions."
The one-day tour, which has been organized specifically for EatGreenDFW.com, begins at JuHa Ranch in Barry, then proceeds to Ennis for lunch at the Brown Street Café and Kolache Depot. Stops in Oak Grove Farms, (which will include a wine tasting), and Garden Harvests round out the tour.
JuHa Ranch, which is near Barry, is owned and operated by Harry Butaud, Judi Glasgow-Butaud, and Harry's son Heath Butaud. They raise their animals without hormones or antibiotics and use controlled grazing to develop native grasslands and pastures and to conserve and develop wildlife habitat.
Oak Grove Farms, a Certified Naturally Grown farm which is near Ennis, is owned by Tommy and Kristi Copeland who have been raising vegetables for several years now. The Copelands are currently growing tomatoes, greens, and other vegetables including Mirai, an American variety of super sweet quick cooking corn that is not widely available.
Garden Harvests is a large roadside vegetable garden and farm stand, created by Fina Longoria-Johnson, a former teacher who uses Garden Harvests as her classroom to educate her customers about fresh healthy food.
The Calais Winery is a boutique winery located at 3000 Commerce St. in Dallas and released its first wine in October of last year.
Cost for the tour is $89 per person. Tickets are available online. Seating is limited.
EatGreenDFW.com is North Texas' first online farmer's market offering a wide variety of seasonal, locally grown vegetables, pasture-raised meats and poultry products, and locally made artisanal food products shipped directly to the home.
