Deep Ellum seeks artists for new outdoor murals and sculptures
Sculptures like this one haven't been repainted since 1998. They need to be redone, say organizers at the Deep Ellum Foundation.
DEEP ELLUM Artists who want to be part of Deep Ellum's Art Park can supply sketches for sculptures to Deep Ellum community organizers. Submissions are due by July 24, 2009, with more information about the sculptures here.
We wrote about this recently when the idea really ramped up in late June. They're now using money from the Farmer's Market TIF to get the improvements rolling -- namely, the concrete sculptures that haven't been painted since 1998. The TIF money will also help pay for mural work on a dozen pillars under 1-45.
They'd like to have the art finished for when the DART Green Line will whiz through, slated for September 2009. There are also new venues opening, including the reopened Trees (and the two bands that leaked that they'll be playing Trees' opening show).
According to a recent press release: "Things are really picking up in Deep Ellum, and the Foundation sees art as a big part of that. Art has been and will be important to the neighborhood as it grows. I see artists being a big part of this community in the grand scheme of things," says Barry Annino, president of the Deep Ellum Foundation.
