Mesquite opossum killing leads to firing of teen camp counselors
A teenage counselor at Camp Rorie Galloway in Mesquite took an axe to an opossum and proceeded to chop it to death while day camper kids watched (in horror, one is tempted to say -- though this would be pure speculation). Babies then emerged from the mother opossum's pouch; they were also killed in an unspecified fashion.
While the three counselors involved in the incident have been fired from their positions at the camp, one witness thinks further punishment is called for. However, under Texas law, opossums are considered "nuisance animals" and are subject to whatever methods of disposal are deemed necessary (according to the cited article).

You bloody well better believe further punishment is called for!
Who was the animal here? Certainly not the pregnant possum.

Chalk it up to ignorance and poor judgement, more than to cruelty. If it had been a snake, nobody would be complaining -- even though most snakes are non-poisonous and extremely beneficial to your garden.
