Video: Bike and Build helps construct home in Garland
Bike and Build is a charity group that organizes bike trips across the country to raise money for and awareness of affordable housing efforts. The Southern U.S. tour (there are eight separate tours currently going on) stopped in Garland on Thursday to help the Garland Habitat for Humanity build a house.
The group arrived Wednesday night, spending the night in the glamorous Sunnyvale Middle School cafeteria in Mesquite Sunnyvale. The build was located in a neighborhood near downtown Garland, one that was a mixture of small, pre-fab homes and newer, showier ones, an incongruity not uncommon in North Texas. The group, along with eight members of Garland Habitat for Humanity and the would-be owner, got started bright and early, quickly putting together the outer framework of the house (the constant hammering in the video below only underscores that the group was all about action).
I got a chance to speak with Josh McLawhorn, one of 31 riders on the tour. Press play for details on things like how much money the group hopes to raise, how far they've come so far, and how maps don't always show you the right way to go.
A big thanks to Mike Bullock for his expert editing skills.

Great article. However, please note that Sunnyvale Middle School is in Sunnyvale, not Mesquite.
