Astronaut Training Center opens in North Richland Hills

15

The Astronaut Training Center is now open in North Richland Hills, providing family-friendly programs to educate and entertain curious future space travelers. The ATC boasts interactive exhibits and historical presentations, such as:

___

Lift Off Theater

Take a ride on a historical video tour of America's race to space. Learn of the challenges that scientists and engineers had to overcome in the face of the intense pressure and scrutiny given to the Apollo missions past and future.

___

Reduced Gravity Trainer

Strap into the Reduced Gravity Trainer to experience 1/6 gravity as you would if walking on the moon. Transport to the Martian Gravity Trainer and learn about walking on the Martian Surface.

___

Lunar Lander Arena

Test your piloting skills against seven other trainees using the Apollo Lunar Lander Simulator. Armstrong had 6 seconds of fuel left at touchdown. Can you make it to Tranquility Base?

___

Lunar Diorama

Experience and re-live the most famous achievement in the history of mankind as you take your "giant leap for mankind." Trainees wear replicated NASA moon suits to walk across a simulated lunar landscape and perform training exercises.

___

The Astronaut Training Center is a 10,000-square-foot indoor facility with multiple training stations replicated from NASA’s Apollo space training program. ATC’s vision is to provide a safe, friendly, educational space frontier experience to private citizens here on Earth. Throughout the summer, the Astronaut Training Center will recreate the space training experience for thousands of people. No longer do you have to be a member of the NASA astronaut program to get hands-on experience about the exciting environment of space.

The Astronaut Training Center is located at 6720 NE Loop 820 (corner of Loop 820 and Rufe Snow Drive) in North Richland Hills. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily through August 31st. More information can be found at www.astronauttrainingcenter.com.

My family and I visited the ATC in North Richland Hills and were totally disappointed. The family played a computer game, dressed up in an astronaut suit (primarly for pictures) and played on a "swing." I could not believe that I paid 17.95 a person to see this exibit that appeard to be built in someones garage. Save your hard earned dollars and take your kids bowling, they'll have more fun and you won't feel ripped off.

That comment is possibly the funniest thing I've seen all day (I know, I need to get out of the house more...).

Sorry you're experience was lame, sunshine.

Thanks for the heads up. Knowing as a sucker for nasa stuff, I was going to go and waste my money. Too bad it sucks. :(

Most well adjusted adults understand that what they receive from life is a reflection of what they put in.
I encourage well adjusted adults to come to ATC and draw their own conclusions. Then if you have a concern or suggestion, just bring it to me and lets discuss it in an adult fashion. Ed Bandy, proud owner, ATC.

I wonder whether actual astronaut training equipment is as lack lustre as Sunshine's report? We are talking about a government institution, after all. :-)

I was contacted by the owner to state that I did not pay the full 17.95+tax. After looking at my receipt I stand to correct my posting that I did not pay the full price, but still paid more than I thought it was worth.

The owners posting is requesting that well adjusted adults visit his facility. Gee, calling your patrons "not well adjusted" is not a good business practice. Best of Luck to you ATC with that attitude.

sunshine24seven is not living up to his/her name very well!!

Sounds like the place is focused on entertaining the kiddos moreso than the adults.

Well jtmbls...I represent myself with honesty that is why I corrected my post. This posting is not about living up to a screen name, however, it is about our disappointing experience at the ATC. Have a good day :)

My 7-year old had a blast at the ATC. The best part was getting to suit up in a replica of an actual Apollo spacesuit and walk around on a mock-up of the moon's surface. He got to pick up moon rocks, climb down the ladder of the LM, salute a flag, look for the famous golf ball on the moon. Sure it was mainly for photo ops, but isn't that the whole point? We are using our family moon photo as our "Merry Christmas from the Moon" card this year! He also loved trying to land the LM using the computer-based lunar lander trainer (which was really challenging, but he managed to do it!) and burnt off energy on the reduced gravity trainer. There is also lots of great educational info displayed around the center - try sharing it with your kids when you're there. Maybe they will develop a new appreciation for the space program that the majority of us seemed to have lost over the last 40 years....... Fan of the ATC

I took my kids to the ATC because I remembered watching the moon landing 40 years ago. They had a blast seeing the actual moonwalk broadcast that I saw in my living room 40 years ago. I think they also appreciated all the equipment the men had to wear and how difficult it really was to land on the moon. The experience generated interesting conversations and now my kids want to tour the NASA space center in Houston. The ATC was fun and a great way to clear the cobwebs from the brain during the summer.

My 7 year old had a great time at ATC as well. He loved the movie, the reduced gravity trainer, the video game and putting on the suit. The pictures we took while there are priceless - you cannot get that experience anywhere in the metroplex. The staff is knowledgeable and super friendly. They are GREAT with kids! I've told all my friends about ATC - we loved it!

We had a FANTASTIC time and I'm sorry to hear the negativity regarding ATC and the experience to be had there. After seeing it featured on every major news station as a story and not PAID advertising, I knew it had to be worth checking into...and it was! I took my kids and we had a BLAST.Perfect place to get out of the heat and enjoy fun yet educational activities for your whole family. The photographs that you go home with are worth the trip alone. I highly recommend it!

The astronaut training center in NRH is really fun. I could hardly drag my 13 and 8 year old out of the building. They loved the simulator and the movie had them captured. It was started by local people and will continue to change as time goes on. Support this local business and your kid's will learn something in the process.
