Richland College to hold Thunderduck Metal Camp

Teenagers will get a hands-on introduction this summer to the high-tech wonders of manufacturing with Richland College’s Thunderduck Metal Camp.

The free camp, one of 19 such camps sponsored by Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, is geared toward students ages 12-16 and introduces them to technical careers. The Thunderduck Metal Camp will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., July 15-21, in Room S153 of Sabine Hall. Spaces are limited for the camp.

During Thunderduck Metal Camp, students will make their first attempts at metal fabricating using metal lathes and mills, as well as designing their own projects using AutoCAD 2009 and creating those designs in a true manufacturing machine shop. Students will take home a machined part from their design.

Guest speakers during the camp include:

* Karla Chandler of API Precision Machining, on July 15

* Todd Ellard of Manda Machine Company, on July 16

* Mike Chadick of NTPI, on July 17

* Joel Foster of HAAS, on July 20

The camp will conclude on July 21 with a field trip to nearby manufacturing facilities. Lunch provided daily by the North Texas Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association.

Richland College received a $4,700 grant from Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs to host its only Texas camp this summer. Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs is the foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association.
