Dallas and Fort Worth desire streetcar systems
... and they may get them sooner rather than later.
The cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are joining forces to make their application for $95 million in federal grant money to be used for the construction of a streetcar system in both downtown districts.
The projects -- which would connect areas of interest and residential buildings with the individual city centers -- were originally planned to have only reached the planning stage by 2012; but with $95 million in fed money in the offing, that timeline could pull forward to the point that streetcars might actually be operating by early 2013.
Initially, the burden falls on city leaders to convince Congress that the projects will lead to job growth and reduce traffic congestion -- thereby freeing up the funds.
