Spiceman’s F.M. 1410 in Dallas is swelling with local and organic
A local, organic selection is delectable and beautifully swelling the aisles at Spiceman and Son's produce outpost the FM 1410.
We have Local-Organic: San Marzano Tomatoes from Ennis, Texas and ...
Local-Certified Organic from Tioga:
Heritage Vine Ripe tomatoes; Porter tomatoes, a large, pink cherry tomato that's packed with flavor; cherry tomatoes and Saladettes; Yukon Gold new potatoes; Gypsy peppers, these are beautiful and sweet grilled or pan-seared; Texas Super Sweet onions retail (these are the onions served at Clark's Outpost BBQ); and Ratatouille veggies: eggplant, cucumbers, yellow squash, and green bell peppers.
From Jeff "Dr. Pepper" Carter in Celina, Texas:
15 or more varieties of Global Warming peppers (we call 'em), which have more to do with the fact that they come from all over the world than the effect itself: Kosovo, Spain, Japan, Hungary, Brazil, Italy, and on n' on ...
Spiceman's usual suspects:
Seabeans, Ramp Bulbs, Maitake/Hen O' Woods mushrooms, Baby Shiitake, zucchini blossoms soon to bloom in the FM 1410 garden.
Louisiana Creole tomatoes SOLD OUT
On the Spiceman's racks at the FM:
* Crescent City Cooking by Susan Spicer (yes, my sister) a most classy and colorful book in substance and story
* Texas EV Olive Oil 12-oz bottle, $17, is an excellent finishing oil and spicy like ... hmmmm ... j' ne se qua
* Cambodian Kampot peppercorns, sea salt and date palm sugar cubes, which are fine tasting condiments
* Fennel pollen, dill pollen, wild sumac berries, Porcini powder and Perique tobacco for culinary infusions
WILD MUSHROOM UPDATE: Nothing shaking until some consistent, daily rains begin and not much product out of Europe until further notice. Offerings of grey morels and Euro Chanterelles have been weak. It could change at any moment, so stay tuned.
Spiceman's "Best of the Dallas Farmer's Market" picks:
Texas figs from Mexia, yellow pear tomatoes, mixed Heirloom tomatoes, fresh shelled peas (mostly Purple Hull....some Speckled Butter and pinto beans limited), Israeli melons
From Spiceman's FM 1410 Garden:
Last week's hail really did some damage to the Micro Greens, as we are not covered up in July, but it was amazing to see what did survive. Our back roof was peeled back like a sardine can by the high winds, so it looks like the whole shed's coming down ... YAY!
Spiceman and Son (Erik) have designed and built a massive compost arena that's already taking in kitchen produce scraps from several area restaurants. We get there at day break to beat the heat, but I have to say that it's brutal out there by 9:30 a.m.
We have a nice stand of squash and zucchini plants and cantaloupes ... Micro basil and Micro leeks.
We'll be flatting up the tables these next few days but right now it's raining at 4 a.m. and I'm cool with that, though it makes this mornings market run a little messy.
Ciao for now, Spiceman and son over n' out.
