Dallas to suspend 470 red-light camera tickets incurred by emergency personnel

5

A new Texas law going into effect on September 1 will exempt emergency workers from getting ticketed for red-light camera infractions incurred while on duty.

The current law exempting them from traffic infractions did not include the relatively new-ish red-light camera scenario. Dallas police vehicles have received about 1,200 red-light tickets, 74% of which were considered "justified." The Dallas Police Department will suspend about 470 citations that were pending.

They're still working up laws to allow emergency personnel to actually drive their vehicles and do CPR and wear their little emergency outfits. So far that stuff hasn't been ironed out. "Ironed out" -- those emergency outfits always look so nicely starched, see. Who doesn't love a man in uniform? But I digress.

What about civilian motorists who are forced to run a red light because of an emergency vehicle behind them? Are they exempted as well?

Im thinking there's an exemption concerning that, as it is a right of way issue.

Ideally, id rather see these things taken down, as they've caused more issues than solved.

I was always told in defensive driving class that if you were at a light you did not have to go through the red light to move for emergency vehicles and that they could simply wait. Maybe that has changed.

My driver's ed instructor said you should always stop for red lights and if the coast is clear, go. Maybe that was bad advise too.
