TWU receives $81,400 grant from TG for new SPRINT program

Texas Woman’s University students who are single mothers will have increased access to technology thanks to an $81,400 grant from TG, a nonprofit student loan guarantor based in Round Rock.

The funds will be used to create the TWU Single Parent Resources, Information, Networking and Technology (SPRINT) program starting at the university this fall.

The program will provide laptop computers and childcare stipends for the 2009-2010 school year to 20 TWU students who are single mothers. Participants also will receive specialized services including career development, leadership training and networking opportunities to help them be successful in their academic careers.

“TWU has a long history of supporting the specific needs of students who are single parents,” said Dr. Monica Mendez-Grant, TWU associate vice president of student life. “These funds will be instrumental in helping these students have increased access to technology and other support services to help them better balance school with their other responsibilities.”

TWU was one of 55 nonprofit organizations selected for funding through TG’s Public Benefit Grant Program, a philanthropic initiative of the company. Overall, TG awarded more than $6.2 million for projects in 2009-10.
