South defeats North as the THSCA All-Star game inaugurates University of Texas’ new artificial field

Players taking part in last evening’s Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) All-Star Football Game had the tremendous honor of being the first to set foot on Darrell K. Royal Memorial’s brand new FieldTurf surface.

As the largest football venue in the state of Texas, DKR Memorial Stadium’s field recently received a high-profile upgrade with the installation of FieldTurf’s innovative and world-leading synthetic turf system. The renovation took place during the Longhorns’ offseason, making last night’s game the first to be played on this coveted new surface.

And the players made sure to christen the state’s most prestigious football ground in a memorable way. South, led in part by Texas A&M signee Dustin Harris and Longhorns-committed running-back Chris Whaley, took an early and decisive lead in the first half, en route to a 48-21 victory over North. Harris stole the show with 307 total yards and two touchdowns, followed closely by Whaley’s three touchdown performance.

“We had been waiting for this moment for a very long time” stated FieldTurf CEO Joe Fields after the game. “The University of Texas’ Memorial field is state-of-the-art and we were extremely proud to see Texas’ best and brightest stars performing so brilliantly on our newest field.”

The THSCA All-Star Game is a high-status annual gathering of the most promising, college-bound football players out of Texas. Of the featured players, no less than 14 have committed to Big 12 colleges.

Overall, 64 players took part in the star-studded game, which has built its reputation over the years for its overwhelming level of talent. Colt McCoy, University of Texas’ starting quarterback and 2008 Walter Camp Award recipient, played in the 2005 edition of the All-Star game, representing Tuscola’s Jim Ned High School.
