Men's Health Magazine has named Arlington the #1 sports-obsessed city in the United States. Other cities and their rankings are listed in the July/August edition of Men's Health.

The rankings were determined through Scarborough Sports Marketing by a tally of how many people attend baseball, basketball, college, and pro football games, as well as high-school sporting events. Men's Health factored in NASCAR attendance and who is catching their sports on TV and radio. They also looked at the number of people vying for tickets to any sport, who's purchasing the most team apparel, and how many people call themselves "foam-finger-waving" fanatics.

"A favorite segment of tourism has always been sports packages," says Jay Burress, president & CEO for the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Arlington is definitely the place to experience sports. Men's Health Magazine got it right!"

Consider the data: The new $1.15 billion dollar Cowboys Stadium opened in June. Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington has been a fan favorite since 1994, and the city will also be welcoming the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in spring 2010. Rounding out the city's tourism product is the original Six Flags Over Texas, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, and scores of hotels, restaurants, shopping, and other entertainment.

Additionally, the magazine states they found an enormous amount of fan energy in Texas.

The real sport that Arlington will favor later in this century will be Speed Walking (soon to be an Olympic sport) sincet they waited until it was too late to even begin having any form of mass transit public transportation and were left with no way to fund same because their sales tax receipt moneys went to build stadiums for wealthy sports franchise owners while those attending the major events in Arlington went to Ft. Worth or Dallas (where they were staying?)for their down time disposable income pleasures.

Rick Yost, says:

Fifty years from now Arlington will have grown so much, spreading out with numerous gigantic sports arenas- gobbling up huge swaths of land as it goes, that Dallas and Fort Worth will become mere suburbs. The area will no longer be called DFW or the Metroplex. It will just be Arlington.

James Scott, says:

Any city claiming the "International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame" should have immediately been disqualified from this ranking.
