Federal grant awards money for police officers’ salaries for Dallas, Arlington, Addison, others
A federal grant called the Cops Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP) has awarded $1 billion to create or preserve law enforcement positions. Of that $1 billion, Texas gets more than $36 million -- including $17 million for Dallas-Fort Worth. See the list below for specific designations per city.
The grants provide three years of full funding for approved entry-level salaries. D Magazine's Wick Allison calls it a “lifeline” for Dallas, which is having trouble propping up police officers' jobs under a $190 million budget deficit.
CHRP was legally required to award half the money to cities with more than 150,000 people. With 95% of the applicants from cities with less than 150,000 people, the application process for smaller cities was competitive. As for large Texas cities, San Antonio received the most funding with more than $10 million. Austin, Houston, and Fort Worth aren't listed.
Dallas-Fort Worth cities awarded CHRP money
Addison: $713,490 -- 3 officer positions
Arlington Police Department: $6,107,248 -- 31 officer positions
City of Dallas: $8,896,300 -- 50 officer positions
City of Sansom Park PD, Fort Worth: $134,407 --1 officer position
City of Forest Hill: $213,946 -- 1 officer position
Hutchins Police Department: $130,550 -- 1 officer position
Lancaster Police Department: $639,096 -- 3 officer positions
