Kids and family events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, July 29 - August 4

0

July is ending, August is beginning, and school is right around the corner. But let's not think about that -- there's still plenty of fun to be had. That includes a three-ring circus in Dallas, Twilight mania in Dallas, Les Mis performed by kids in Garland, and a group bike ride in Plano.

Starting tonight, Wednesday, July 29, American Airlines Center in Dallas will play host to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey present Over the Top. Over The Top is a wacky circus spectacular where Ringmaster Chuck Wagner and clown eccentric Tom Dougherty compete for control of a magical top hat that brings to life their fantastical imaginations. The circus will be performing every day (except August 3) through August 9.

Thursday, July 30 is the kickoff date for Twicon 2009, the premiere unofficial conference for Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight saga. Hordes of tweens, teens, and more than a few adults will descend on the Sheraton Dallas Hotel to watch the movie, listen to some Twilight-inspired music (like The Bella Cullen Project), and meet some of the lesser-known stars (sorry, folks, no Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart). The convention will continue through the weekend.

Think you know the iconic musical Les Miserables? Gina Robertson, theater critic for John Garcia's The Column, says Les Miserables School Edition will make you think again. Starting Friday, July 31 and continuing through the weekend at the Patty Granville Arts Center in Garland, Robertson says this show is "as grim and gritty as any adult presentation."

Finally, on Saturday, August 1, Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve in Plano will be the starting point for the Plano Fun Ride, a bicycle ride for children and their families. You'll have to get there bright and early (start time is 6:30 a.m.), but it's for a good cause -- the ride benefits the Relief Nursery of Collin County, a child abuse prevention program, and the Plano Children’s Medical Clinic.
