Kalita Humphreys Theater to get new tenants
A sad note in the midst of all the attention the new arts district is getting is the fact that the Dallas Theater Center will be vacating their home in Dallas’ only Frank Lloyd Wright designed building, the Kalita Humphreys Theater. But maybe moving Dallas’ main theater company out of the space is the best thing for it. News broke Monday that the Uptown Players will utilize the space after the DTC is in their downtown home.
If companies with smaller audiences move in, perhaps the renovation, which sucked out much of the charm of Frank Lloyd Wright’s original design in order to expand the building’s capacity, could be undone. Something to consider tonight at Preservation Dallas’ program “The Vision and Philosophy Behind the Kalita Humphreys Theater,” which will be held not at the Humphreys, but at the Dallas Black Dance Theatre in the Arts District.

The City of Dallas is currrently working on a master plan for the Kalita Humphreys, working with the Dallas firm Booziotis & Associates, the DTC and neighborhood and cultural stakeholders. We began the planning process earlier in the year and expect for the master plan to be completed later this Fall.
