North Texas-based Turning Point to hold largest physically-challenged event in the South
On Saturday, June 6, Turning Point will host the 19th Annual Extravaganza, "Celebration of Choices," the largest event for the physically challenged community in the South. "The Extravaganza gives people with disabilities, young and old, the chance to experience outdoor activities, from scuba diving to rock climbing to waterskiing," says Michael ‘Shorty’ Powers, Director and founder of Turning Point. The event is held at Bachman Lake in Dallas, from 9am to 4pm. Registration is free for the physically challenged.
Turning Point, Paraplegics On Independent Nature Trips, is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing self-esteem and confidence in physically challenged children and adults through participation in adapted outdoor activities and adventures. The Extravaganza meets this mission, with over 300 participants trying nearly 30 activities, including rock climbing, horseback riding, waterskiing, fencing, jet skiing, archery, fishing, golf and zip lines, to name a few. "With a little encouragement, people can experience activities that enrich their lives, boost their confidence and get them off the couch to enjoy their lives," says Powers.
Friday, June 5, begins the weekend with a Billiards Tournament and a Skeet Shoot Tournament throughout the Dallas area. Pre-registration is required for these Tournaments.
The main event Extravaganza kicks off Saturday at Bachman Lake Recreation Center, 2750 Bachman Drive, with activities for everyone. Physically challenged children and adults, requiring an orthopedic device, can spend the day participating in adapted sports and seeing the latest in available state-of-the-art equipment. For each accomplished activity, a drawing ticket is received that goes towards thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Be it sailing, jet skiing, kayaking, pontoon rides, archery, air rifles, fishing, remote control cars, hand cycling, or golf there is something for everyone! To see the looks on the faces of the children experiencing an adventure for the first time in their lives, is well-worth your attendance! Lunch is being prepared by the Wylie High School Culinary Arts.
Paralympic Gold-Medalists Randy Snow (Olympic Hall of Fame) and Candace Cable will be present to share their expertise and knowledge. This is a wonderful opportunity for learning, experiencing, and inspiring.
Dallas Parks and Recreation and Bass Pro Shops, Garland, TX, are co-sponsors of the Extravaganza; Mobility Medical is the Official Medical Equipment Vendor. Texas Parks and Wildlife is providing a catfish tank for casting and fishing.
Able-bodied friends and family are also welcome to attend and to view the activities available.
