Approximately 125 Dallas Independent School District students from 10 high schools will attend the Dallas Hispanic Youth Symposium at the Southern Methodist University from June 30 through July 3.
Sponsored by Dallas ISD, SMU, the Hispanic College Fund, and other businesses and organizations, the Dallas Hispanic Youth Symposium is the first Hispanic youth symposium in the state of Texas.
The goal of the Hispanic youth symposium is to allow students to develop a network of peers and mentors, learn about resources and tools for college, develop a long-term career vision, and experience being “college students” and living in the dorms. The agenda of the symposium is filled with workshops and networking opportunities. Also, competitions will be held for $2,000, $1,000, and $500 scholarships in art, speech, talent and essay categories.
Dallas ISD students who will participate in the symposium attend these high schools: Booker T. Washington for the Performing and Visual Arts, Emmett J. Conrad, Early College, Hillcrest, North Dallas, Samuell, Sunset, Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Woodrow Wilson, and W. T. White.
The opening ceremony for the symposium has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, at 4 p.m., at the Meadows School of the Arts-Caruth Auditorium in SMU, 6101 Bishop Blvd. The closing ceremony will take place at the same location at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Local and state dignitaries will participate in the opening and closing ceremony.
