Carroll Senior High hires two state champion coaches

Carroll Athletic Director Kevin Ozee was serious about his quest to recruit the state’s best coaches to Southlake. Ozee took a huge step toward realizing that goal Monday when School Board members approved the hiring of two coaches with state championship rings.

Carroll Trustees hired Teri Morrison of Waco Midway High School and Arthur Stanfield of Red Oak High School to lead the Lady Dragon girls’ basketball and volleyball programs, respectively. Morrison was the 2008-2009 District Coach of the Year. Her team defeated Mansfield Timberview to win the University Interscholastic League’s 4A Girls’ State Basketball title this year. Her overall win-loss record is 459-201, posting a 70-7 record during her two-year stint at Waco Midway.

Likewise, Stanfield is no newcomer to titles. During his 31-year teaching and coaching career, he has won 21 district championships, seven regional championships and three state championships. His career record is 626-133. Stanfield joins the Lady Dragon program coming off the heels of 37-6 volleyball season in 2008-2009. He led his Red Oak Lady Hawks to state titles in 1992, 1995 and 2002.

“We couldn’t be more excited to add these two standout coaches to our Dragon athletic staff,” said Superintendent David Faltys. “One of the reasons we hired Kevin was because we believed he could recruit some of the state’s top coaches to join a Dragon program already tradition rich in excellence and success. He has wasted no time in achieving that goal.”

“Finding and hiring head coaches for our Lady Dragon basketball and volleyball positions has been my first and foremost goal since joining the Carroll leadership team,” Ozee said. “What better place to start than with two coaches who have both reached the pinnacle of achievement in their respective sports. I cannot wait to see the possibilities for our female athletes as they begin the 2009-2010 seasons under the leadership of these two coaches. I hope this community will get behind them and help them build strong and lasting legacies here in Southlake.”

Morrison received her Master of Science in Secondary Education from Texas A&M University at Commerce and her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Texas at Arlington. She began her teaching and coaching career at James Martin High School in 1983, with career stops in Poteet High School and Royse City High School. She has been named District Coach of the Year a total of 17 times during her 26-year career in education.

“I am very excited to be the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Carroll High School,” said Morrison. “The opportunity to work for one of the best school districts in Texas is an added bonus. I believe great things are on the horizon for Lady Dragon Basketball.”

Stanfield earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978. His first teaching/coaching job was at Irma Marsh Middle School in Castleberry ISD in 1978. He later went on to teach and coach in Grand Prairie, Mansfield and A Maceo Smith High School in Dallas. He, too, has a resume of professional coaching honors, including being named Coach of the Year on multiple occasions. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the Association of Texas Professional Educators.

“I am excited and honored,” said Stanfield. “Carroll is a place of great tradition. I’m just hoping that I can come in and do for volleyball what has already been done in other sports.

Morrison is certified to teach secondary history and all levels of physical education. Stanfield is certified to teach secondary life-earth science, math, history, health and physical education. School officials say they are not certain at this point exactly what teaching roles the two coaches will fill for CISD. Morrison will serve as the girls’ athletic coordinator for Carroll in addition to her head coaching responsibilities.
