$29 million approved to study failing Trinity River levees
The Dallas City Council approved $29 million to study the Trinity River levees, which the Army Corp of Engineers and environmental researchers gave a failing grade. The ridiculously expensive study is set to conclude in spring 2012 and will include 1,500 boring samples from the 23-mile levee system (both uses of the word boring apply here).
From there, more money could be expected for repairing the damages and shoring up the levees.

Now all they need to do is STOP the bridges and trinity plan and actually put the money toward fixing the levees.
I realize that this isn't what 'big business' wants - but ya know, I bet the folks living in the areas that would flood do.

No doubt, id rather have strong levees to protect downtown than a pretty bridge anyday. Kirks/Lepperts Folly, as the history books should call it, has been a shoe-horned plan from the get-go. Another reason on the list im considering moving back to austin, at least there they seem to "get it" when it comes to both protecting their people and civic projects.

The pump was in the last bond package and out for bid. Lightning hit the pump twice and it failed. I'm not sure how that could've been prevented.

If Dallas fails at proving the levees are sound, flood zones get remapped and insurance becomes much more costly for homeowners and businesses alike. Cost of Dallas properly reinforcing said levees will likely hike property taxes...either way, home/property owners will pay.
I <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2009/feb/25/us-army-corps-engineers-rates-dallas-floodway-unac/">seem to recall</a> the Corp of Engineers advising Dallas against the Trinity Project for this very reason. Gasp! Warnings ignored, weight has been thrown, Dallas money officially located where its mouth is.
