Dallas needs around $80 million in federal funds for streetcar system

Dallas desires this streetcar. This streetcar desires Dallas.
Dallas desires this streetcar. This streetcar desires Dallas.

The City of Dallas is looking to improve its current public transportation options with a streetcar system. At $20 million per mile of track, the city needs between $60 million and $100 million for the initial phase. A route will not be decided when the council learns how much federal money it can get.

The city asked Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson to include the streetcar project in a surface transportation bill the Texas house will consider later this month.

We probably would still have a trolley (streetcar) system if General Motors, Standard oil and I think it was, Goodyear tires hadn't conspired to do away with the streetcar systems in cities small and large all across America during the 1950's. These three greedy, corporate monsters somehow forced electric streetcars off the city streets of American cities so General Motors could make the busses that ran on Goodyear's tires using Standard oil's gasoline to fuel them. How, sad.

Bet we could bring back the Hop-A-Buses a lot cheaper.

20 million a mile, what a colossal waste of money. We are talking 4 to 5 miles of track. That's nothing, a street car to nowhere. And of course it wont pay for its own operating cost either.

I don't get why it would cost $20 million a mile...

Perhaps this is just being used as a generic representation of a streetcar but the photo appears to be of a Toronto Canada car. They are being replaced with new ones within a couple of years. They also operate on non-standard wide gauge track. I doubt a new system would want that situation or used cars that old.

I am a big fan of streetcars and hope Dallas can continue to plan and complete their reintroduction.

A successful vintage streetcar line does operate in Dallas, the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority, which I have had the pleasure to ride.

I like streetcars, too, but we don't need 'em. I mean, we do need public transportation, but let's pick one solution and run with it.

At the very least, let's make DART's online trip planner capable of plotting a route from the Addison TC to the Richland College area without taking me for a scenic tour of Garland and a detour to White Rock lake.

I like street cars too, but why tear up The streets for another 12 years or towards the End of the World, decade they say, when bikes and walking can also be a source of human health and transportation...Pavel has hit a good nail here, While I have heard, Lets quit hiring... the old Southern term..Yankee's who manupulate our roads and parking lots...And the Dallas folks leave the driving and moving towards us....A/T, Behind the scene for feet and tires....

please PLEASE don't put it on Main street. It's bad enough with the buses.

I'd rather use that $60-100 MM to bring more residences to downtown or put the retail in that will attract people from the offices. It could go a much longer way.

You know, after a while, you have to just laugh at Dallas. It's so sad.

What's with the nostalgia? I remember actually using the streetcars in Dallas. That doesn't mean I'm deranged enough to want them back.
For what?
There's no retail businesses downtown, so nobody comes downtown. Who'll ride the streetcars- the homeless?

Take the same money in this useless scenario, and apply it to the cost of having the DART rail operate until 3am or so(when they get it running), and you'll do some good for downtown- maybe.

You considered that a pleasure? I bet walking isn't too much slower...

ScoDo SHHHH! You're gonna spoil the joke. I charged him $3 to sit on a park bench and *"let him out"* after three stops.

Opportunity comes in many forms... mostly of exploitation of the guillible

And why not have Hop-A-Bus meet Cash Cab? Someone on the bus always wins a free day pass or maybe a monthly pass when they ride around to the "connected" downtown areas. Sorry, just my wishful thinking getting in the way again.

if they think that people will leave their uptown office, hop a street car and then go back to work, how long will that take roundtrip? I figure 15-20 mins to get food as well.

How many times do you have to ask "What's the Destination?"

Build it. They will come -- is stuff of movies.
Definitely putting the Trolley before the Horse ... sense.

I don't mind riding it for the fun of it but when I was doing my intern at City Vet, I decided to walk instead and got there sooner than the trolley did.

This is pretty brilliant. If I could actually take public transportation to go out drinking, I'd spend a lot more money in local drinkeries.
