McKinney library presents summer 2009 reading programs
MCKINNEY The lazy days of summer are here, and in the Texas heat, that can mean many days spent indoors or lounging by a cool body of water. One of the best ways to beat boredom is a good book, and the Hall Memorial Library in McKinney is making it easy for readers of any age to find the perfect one with summer reading programs starting today.
"The children's programs are always popular, and there is plenty for young readers this summer. But we like to give all ages an opportunity to participate in a summer reading program. Adults with or without children participating in our youth services summer programs are encouraged to participate in the adult summer reading program. This isn't a stressful experience, just an encouraging and easy way to get in some great reading this summer," said Library director Beth Scudder.
Adults participating in the Adult Summer Reading Program at the library, 101 E. Hunt St., receive a green McKinney folder containing a summer reading log, information about the library's adult book club and other goodies. Readers are encouraged to keep track of their reading in the log, and on Saturday, August 8, an end-of-summer party means an opportunity to share favorite summer reads. The library's adult book club will continue to meet through the summer on the first Wednesday of the month at noon, and new members are welcome.
Summer favorite programs return this summer for children ranging in age from infants with their caregivers to teenagers, now with even more variety. The range of programs target age-specific activities to encourage a love of reading at any age with prizes, games and even movies with ties to books.
"It's important to keep children's minds working during their summers away from school. Our library has a lot of fun ways for kids and teens to keep reading this summer, and the variety of programs to make it fun and interesting," said Scudder.
Wednesdays are Movie Day. Showings for the 2 p.m. movies include popular titles Iron Man, Dark Knight and Twilight. All movies are free of charge and all are rated PG or PG-13. Refreshments will be served. On Thursdays, teens can participate in yoga, a Twilight movie and book discussion, crafts and even game day.
The Summer Reading Club for kids is open to children ages 3 through sixth grade, and while it officially started June 1, the club is still accepting participants. All other programming starts June 8 and run through various dates in the summer. For information on the all summer reading program and the McKinney Public Library System, please visit the Web site.
