Dallas Animal Services issues reminder tips on how to treat your dogs during the summer

0

— Every summer Dallas Animal Services receives an increased number of requests to investigate reports of dogs left in hot cars, dogs tied out with no shelter, no water or both. Attached is a list of tips that may keep Dallas residents and their pets safe and happy during the hot summer months.

Pets in Parked Cars Even with windows open, the temperature inside a car can reach 120 degrees in a few minutes. If you see a pet in a parked car, alert the establishment's management of the issue. If the owner does not return quickly, call 311.

Pets in the back of Pick-up Trucks It is illegal to transport unsecured dogs in the back of pickups. Make sure they're in a secure pet carrier or inside the cab of the truck.

Toxic Substances. Plant fertilizer, insecticides, antifreeze, and certain plants are poisonous to pets. Be sure to keep all chemicals out of contact and check the labels of the plants you have for toxicity to pets.

Dog Bites More people will be outside as well as more dogs. If any animal bites or scratches you, call 311 to report the incident. Avoid getting bitten by avoiding stray animals. Do not tease them, throw things at them, or yell at them either.

Pet Identification Many pets are lost in the spring/summer. Be sure your pets wear identification collars. Consider microchipping your pet too.

Mosquitoes, Fleas and Ticks These common summertime parasites can spread disease and cause suffering for your pets. Be sure to check your pet regularly and address any problems they have with these pests.

Swimming Pools and Pets Always supervise pets in pools and around water. Do not force your pets to 'swim' or get wet.

Water and Shade Always have plenty of fresh water and shade available for pets outside.

Traveling with your Pet. Be sure airlines/hotels accept your pet. Find out what paperwork is needed to transport your pets and carrying restrictions. If you're going to board your animal, check out the facilities ahead of time and reserve your spot so there will be space for them when you go.

Pets and Exercise Exercise your pet during the cooler morning or evening hours. Carry water for your pet too.

Pets and Summer Events Don't take your pets to concerts, fairs, or celebrations that have fireworks. Loud noises and bright lights may scare your pet causing it to be nervous, aggressive, or run away.
